RV's in Charleston

My husband and I are planning a trip down the coast from NC to GA. The endof January. We want to spend sometime in Charleston. Are there any RV campgrounds in the area or parking in town for an RV? We are not opposed to renting a car if possible and staying out of the city. Any help would be appreciated. Also any other places we should make it our business to see alnog the way. Beaches? Islands? Savannah, GA is our other big stop and RV issues are the same. once again any help would be appreciated.

RV's in Charleston

I am not sure if there are any RV campgrounds, but there is one in North Charleston, but I don%26#39;t know how safe that is. Plus, it is a drive to downtown. There may be one also north of Mt. Pleasant towards, Awendaw... ? not sure. As for RV parking downtown, I would say no. The streets are very narrow and just getting an RV to a parking spot would be hard. If you wanted to stay downtown and are going to be sleeping in the RV, then there are some uncovered public parking spots by the Riverdogs stadium but you would have to call the police department to see if you can stay there overnight (also that lot is used by the medical university during the day to park). Another option is calling the Charleston Riverview Hotel (soon to be the Marriott?). I know they are having specials right now for like $69/night, and parking is included with that price (all uncovered outside). So, maybe you could just rent the room and sleep in your RV and then you wouldn%26#39;t get in trouble for sleeping in their parking lot. That is also near the Riverdogs stadium (';The Joe';). That way you can take a bus, taxi, or maybe even the hotel shuttle dowtown and you wouldn%26#39;t have to rent a car.

RV's in Charleston

Here is a list of campgrounds in South Carolina rv-clubs.us/southcarolina_rv_campgrounds.htm… You don%26#39;t want to be driving the RV in the downtown area, that%26#39;s for sure though you may only need to take a cab in and out. Do a google for rv campgrounds in Georgia and you%26#39;ll probably find the same list as the one for South Carolina.

You should make an effort to visit one of the plantations in the area. As to beaches, it%26#39;s not swimming season but it%26#39;s always nice to visit Folly Beach and Sullivans Island no matter the time of year. Most of the islands are gated and you can%26#39;t access unless your staying there but Folly Beach and Sullivans are accessible.

There is a campground on Hwy 17 South near Redtop (south of downtown Charleston) that accomodates RVs. It is called Oak-something; I can%26#39;t remember the exact name. It is near the intersection of Hwy 17 with Bees Ferry Road. Edisto Beach State Park also has a campground right on the beach; I see lots of RVs there when at Edisto It is around south of 45 miles downtown Charleston.

I wouldn%26#39;t attempt to drive an RV downtown. I remember as a child riding on school buses through the downtown streets (which were MUCH less congested then than they are now) and what close calls we had with other vechicles and how many tree limbs the bus would ';brush by';. Most of the public parking downtown is in parking garages that won%26#39;t even accomodate a custom van, much less an RV. I would rent a car to sightsee around the area, especially downtown.
