Could anyone tell me if bikes can be rented on an hourly or half-day bases in Kiawah? We are staying on Seabrook Island but would love to ride bikes in Kiawah. Would we be able to get on the Island, I heard that it is gated? Its our first visit to the area (Easter week) and like to be active. Any suggestions on either island for keeping busy. Thanks, Judy

It is possible to transport a bike onto Kiawah by car. For this purpose, park your car and enter Kiawah%26#39;s beach at Beachwalker County Park ($5 per day to park; open only on weekends until April). Once you are on the beach, you can bike wherever you wish and as far as you choose to go on Kiawah.
You can also drive onto Kiawah for a lunch or dinner reservation at one of the restaurants. The security gate will give you one day pass for that purpose. I do not know whether you would then be able to rent a bike on the island, but here is the information -
The only bike rental facilities located on Kiawah are connected with the Kiawah Island Golf Resort. There is one location at the Night Heron Park Nature Center (East Beach area, near The Sanctuary Hotel), and another a Cougar Point Golf Course (West Beach area). If you call the resort at 843-768-2121 and ask to be connected to one of these locations, the bike shop can tell you whether or not someone not staying on the island would have access.
Do NOT attempt to ride your bike to and from Seabrook. Biking on the causway out to Kiawah is dangerous (lots of fast traffic, and no shoulders) and strictly forbidden except for highly skilled bikers with special passes. After a new bike trail is completed, sometime in the next two years, it may be possible to bike between the two islands.

Sunlvr,
There%26#39;s plenty of biking to be done on SI without having to go to Kiawah. Seabrook Island Rd makes a seven mile loop around the island. Add the various side streets and you can chalk up some miles.
While SI doesn%26#39;t have all the bike paths that Kiawah does, it is a ';residential'; community. The speed limit is 25 mph (and if you go over by even one mile;-) ) . Grab a map, ride to the crab dock (Cap%26#39;n Sam%26#39;s Road by the Duneloft and Creek watch villas), then to the Equestrian Center. And don%26#39;t forget about Camp St. Christopher; there%26#39;s a nature trail.
We%26#39;ve owned a villa for two years. Everytime we visit we find a new street we haven%26#39;t seen before.
Have a great time.
Eliza
PS. There is supposed to be a bike path from SI to Fresh Fields. I believe I read that it would be complete in the spring.
