A group of college friends and I are coming down from Indiana for our spring break, which runs from March 11-17. We plan on spending St. Patrick%26#39;s Day in Savannah, but thought about Charleston for earlier in the week. We have one couple and two or three additional people. Can anyone recommend space to accommodate all of us on the cheap? We%26#39;re poor college kids who plan to sleep on floors once we reach Savannah. I stayed in the Holiday Inn Historic District last summer and loved it. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!
College Spring Break in Charleston/Savannah
You may do best to try to book a hotel outside of downtown, or to rent a cottage or condo at one of the beaches. (March may not be great beach weather, but you could luck out with some temps in the 70%26#39;s.) Assuming you have a car, you can easily drive into Charleston and park for the day. Garages are not expensive and are readily available.
Check ';rent from owner'; sites like www.vrbo.com for rentals on Folly Beach, which is very convenient to Charleston and has restaurants and activities that might interest you. (N.B. - Some owners will not be ';wild'; about renting to a college group, so you wil have to reassure them that you are neat and responsible.)
College Spring Break in Charleston/Savannah
The chances of finding a place in Savannah this late are pretty slim. And it will be expensive! I hate to tell you, but the hotels/motels really jack the prices up for the St Patricks weekend. However, you can sure try. Just start calling and hope that you luck up on something.
I%26#39;m from Indiana but I live in Charleston now!
Check out this link:

It is a hostel that is in the downtown area. Beds start at $19 per night, or you can look into private rooms that start at $55 per night. I live in the neighborhood-it is great during the day but you have to use caution at night, so if you are going out to the bars you would want to use cabs, but the cab ride would be short and cheap. The hostel also rent bikes.
Notsohostel sounds like a great place. Thanks to TroubleDoll for mentioning it!
It looks like there is a CARTA bus stop at Spring and Ashley. See:

TroubleDoll, do you have any experience with using these buses? Do they run close to schedule, and are they safe and understandable for tourists?
I have never personally used CARTA. I walk everywhere because I like the exercise. I do know that the buses are frequented by people traveling from the downtown neighborhoods to the Historic District for work. They are never crowded.
